The 2017 release series continues and the family expands on Saturday March 11th with the release of Beach Noir, the debut EP of Lansing garage rockers Hut Two Hike. Recorded in a couple sweaty live sessions at GTG House late last summer, the EP is a rush of chaotic energy, with a three guitar attack bouncing around in a jangly swirl, complementing the wry vocal delivery and the careening rhythm section to deliver a timeless sounding rock and roll performance. An advance review from City Pulse states “the record moves from moody, haunting ballads [to] feisty, organ-driven ‘60s garage-rock” and we can’t wait to share it with everyone. The release party Saturday night, at the Avenue Cafe, also will feature performances from ex-Crucifucks member Lee Gus Varner, and fellow locals Conspicuous Bystanders, Half Tongue, and The Plurettes. Check out more info for the show here and give “Hinterland Hop” a listen below!

Last fall we had the pleasure of releasing Small Parks‘ debut LP Honest Light and starting this week they’ll be touring the midwest in support of it. Hope some of our friends in well-worn GTG territories like Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and Chicago can make it out to give the “new guys” some welcome slaps on the back (not too hard) and also looking forward to the new friends sure to follow in the other towns. Honest Light truly is the sum of its parts – it sounds like what happens when a group of people from experimental music backgrounds come together to play melodic post-punk and let their instincts take over. It’s catchy without being overly formulaic, and progressive without a hint of pretension. Furthermore, their live show is simply top-notch, energetic, passionate, and real. If it sounds like we’re happy to have them in our ranks, it’s because we are! Check out the dates below, and we hope to see all our hometown family at the Lansing show on March 12.
3/3 – Detroit, MI @ Matkin House
3/4 – Elyria, OH @ Blank Slate Elyria
3/5 – Oxford, OH @ Grixxly’s Crib
3/7 – Peoria, IL @ Rail II
3/8 – Moline IL, @ The Record Mill
3/9 – Minneapolis, MN @ The 331
3/10 – Milwaukee, WI @ Frank’s Power Plant
3/11 – Chicago, IL @ Township
3/12 – Lansing, MI @ Mac’s Bar

After a year and a half of planning, He Just Wrote Them Like That – A Tribute To George Harrison is now out. It’s available from our bandcamp for a donation-based download, with all proceeds going to benefit Planned Parenthood. We’re honored and humbled to say that the release party we had at The Avenue Cafe on 2/25 (George’s birthday!) was able to raise over $1000 to Planned Parenthood. This is truly a highlight of our work as a label and we can’t thank the attendees and supporters enough. So check out the compilation, featuring brand new recordings of George Harrison songs by Jason Alarm, Carm, The Plurals, Calliope, The Hunky Newcomers, Johnny Unicorn, The Stick Arounds, Drinking Mercury, Scary Women, Mad Moon, Dim, and more! 21 different artists!
Check out the playlist below for some highlights from the release party. Thanks so much to the Avenue Cafe for being such great supporters of GTG Records and all that we do.
We all have our goals and dreams and resolutions and such whenever the calendar rolls over, and while we’re doing our best to reassure friends and family that the world isn’t ending (yet anyway), we’ve been thinking about what the point of this label is in the first place. Sure, we all have our own self-involved reasons for playing music, but the whole point of building a community around independent, weirder, and/or less-commercial music is to give a voice to people and ideas that may not be heard otherwise and to inject some sort of positivity into our surrounding community. Let it be heard that we’re committed to doing our part to contribute positive and creative energy to help make the navigation through this life a little bit more bearable. And we’re doubling down to bring more of it out this year! It’s gonna be a fun! Scary! Wild! Inspiring! All kinds of good stuff. Happy New Year!

Let the shining rays of brilliance shine! Bermuda Snohawk 2016 has arrived, the GTG/ Bermuda Mohawk annual holiday gift (in its 11th edition!) of wintry-yuletide-seasonal joy and disaffection – a stocking stuffer of love and depravity! Up for free download via BMP, check out new and unreleased tunes from City Mouse, Cavalcade, The Plurals, Frank and Earnest, Scary Women, The Hunky Newcomers, Sleeping Timmy, middleman, Dale J Gordon, Bluffing the Ghosts, and MORE, including the various side projects featuring folks from all over the geographical map and musical (and non-musical) realm. This comp has become something of a Lansing-based DIY institution (for better or worse) and it just sort of comes together by itself at this point, with GTG and BMP just sort of lighting the path a bit. With how 2016 has been as a year, there’s a bit more darkness lurking at the edges of a lot of these tracks, but still plenty to laugh about all the way. Putting this comp together is always a highlight of the year for us, and there can be something very cathartic about just having some fun and making music with abandon. Thanks to everyone who joined in to help make it happen this year, and anyone that didn’t but wants to in the future, come on over! There’s literally no process to curating the lineup than people sending stuff to us so it’s a free-for-all, all-is-welcome party. Enjoy yourselves, and let’s hold ourselves up, together, for the last week of this gut-punching year. Much love from GTG and BMP!

Formed in 2009, The Stick Arounds – consisting of members of old-school Lansing powerhouses Calliope, the Pantones, and Gentleman Callers – take you to a sonic neighborhood where garage rock, Byrds-esque pop, Guided By Voices-inspired abandon, and classic rock all happily live together. A mainstay of mid-Michigan dive bars, when the time came to make an album the band decided to eschew conventions and record where they felt most comfortable: in front of a live audience. The project that followed ended up becoming a labor of love for the GTG family as the venue for the live recording was the now-defunct but much beloved GTG-operated DIY/ warehouse venue The Mystery Garage and the recording and mixing engineer was the Hat Madder’s Isaac Vander Schuur. The album, appropriately titled Mystery Garage, captures the essence of the band and documents a place and time, as all great live albums are meant to. Check out the album for 12 songs of tightly crafted rock and roll songs with a chiming, three guitar attack to complement the impressive group vocal efforts – best enjoyed cranked up with the windows down. Order the LP here or stream it on Spotify!
