Plurals Music: New, Current, and Future!!!!1

Tommy Plurals says: The Plurals have released quite a bit of new music in the last few months! Seriously! Yes, we put out the EP Chazzwazzers as well as a few compilation tracks in December 2014 (round-up below) but today some more new Plurals music is getting to the world, courtesy of Infintesmal Records, a label in Jacksonville, Florida.

Jimmi, the mastermind behind Infintesmal, asked us just a couple weeks ago if we had anything lying around as he had decided to do a “March Madness Singles Series” featuring a new single every day for the second half of March and he wanted to feature some Plurals music. Since we had just cleared out a lot of our backlog with Chazzwazzers and the comp songs we weren’t sure what we could contribute at first but after some deliberation (which took awhile because Nich was on tour with Hunky Newcomers) we figured that we could release a song that we recorded for the new album that didn’t make the final tracklist called “Marigold.” We set the song aside after it didn’t fit the flow (we recorded 18 songs over the course of the album sessions and there are 12 songs on the album, so…) and weren’t sure exactly where we would ultimately release it but I’m glad this is where it’s going to be heard. The song just sounds like spring to me – wistful, epic, kinda watery, mostly fuzzy… yeah… – so beginning this new phase of the label and the season as a whole with it seems right. For the b-side we settled on “Wonderful Way” which had its first life on the 2011 Snohawk but since only a handful of people would have that at this point it seemed like a good idea to give it another shot. This song has always been a personal favorite of The Plurals and as far as our “studio creation” songs go this is one of the best: dreamy vocals by Hattie, singing from the perspective of a tree, with Nich doubling on organ and bass while I mostly stay out of the the way with guitar texture stuff… it doesn’t get much better for me.

So anyway, if you missed the other things we’ve done…

In December we also released a new song called “Winter Break” on the annual Bermuda Snohawk compilation. This song was originally envisioned as a jokey song about having a crush in high school but like most of our jokes ended up being more sincere and reflective of such bygone unrequited feelings. Mostly, it’s a catchy tune.

Right around the same time that “Winter Break” came out we also had the pleasure to be featured on a compilation released by Dirt Cult Records featuring bands covering songs written by Todd Congelliere. Todd C (as the kids call him) is the man behind Recess Records and also has the frustrating-to-the-rest-of-the-world distinction of being a part of several bands that are all great: FYP, Toys That Kill, Underground Railroad to Candyland, Stoned At Heart, solo projects and more than that I’m sure. We covered a song called “You’ll Hear My Voice” that has been released by Todd solo and the band Stoned At Heart. The other bands on this comp are pretty sweet too: Low Culture, Iron Chic, Brokedowns, and more… including some guy named Mike Watt.

The new album will be out in July. I mean it this time, I know I’ve said it would be out soon before but right now I’m waiting for a reference lacquer master from Lucky Lacquers to show up, as in today. And once the album is out there will be a lot of touring. Stay tuned!

Happy New Honah Lee Year!!

33on45-front-cover-web

Honah Lee’s new album 33 on 45 is available today from iTunes, Amazon, and for streaming on their website! The album will get its vinyl release in late February and you can stay tuned to us for more info on that!

33 On 45 (a reference to the band’s tendency to perform songs live at breakneck speed) was recorded with Joe Boldizar at Retro City Studios in Philadelphia, PA throughout 2013 and 2014 between Honah Lee’s many tours and it features both their heaviest and catchiest music to date. Influenced by the sugary distorted frenzy of the early work of Foo Fighters and Weezer, Honah Lee marry their punk rock energy to strong songwriting on 33 On 45 to create what feels like a warp-speed Greatest Hits album that packs in more hooks than its just-under-a-half-hour running time would suggest.

The year has just begun… can’t wait to see what’s next!

GTG075: The Plurals – “Chazzwazzers” / OUT TODAY

chazzwazzerscover
The Plurals just got home from an east coast tour with Honah Lee (that went amazing, thank you so much to everyone involved!) and after a year of tours of damn near every corner of the country (minus the northwest, we’re coming back soon, we promise!), a new 7-inch, music video releases, and the completion of a new full-length (out spring 2015!) you’d think that they’d be done for the year and would rest up for the winter before hitting everything hard next year… but your short-sighted ass would be wrong!! Sorry, that was a little judgemental and short-sighted itself… I… I really need to work on some of these anger management issues. But we’re just excited that The Plurals are following in the steps of our greatest inspirations like Bonnet and the boys in You-Hoo and that B. Yancey lady (though, on a serious editorial note, Smashing Pumpkins did the surprise internet release thing back in 2000 so let’s not give anyone too much credit here) and are releasing a brand new EP today that no one even knew they were recording! Chazzwazzers features 6 brand new recordings and was recorded (for the most part) really quickly over the course of a handful of sessions in October and November of this year. You can download it for free or donation over at bandcamp. Limited physical copies will be available at Plurals and related bands’ Lansing shows this month.

The songs on Chazzwazzers are mostly acoustic-guitar driven but aren’t totally stripped down either. When it became apparent that the new Plurals full-length wouldn’t be out until springtime of 2015 we didn’t want to let the gap between releases be too long and since the album had been recorded over an extended period of time we wanted to just bust something out really quick to put a shot of energy into the Plurals discography. The idea of having acoustic guitar drive the songs was thrown out to try something different so ultimately we recorded three brand new songs (“Coke Daddy,” “Something About Overthinking,” and “Colorado Sun”) that were essentially finished during the recording process as well as two acoustic-based versions of songs (“Facebook” and “Prolly Knot”) that will be on the new album. To round things out (and to completely derail the idea of an “acoustic EP”) we finished off a song called “Ori” (a tribute to a beloved GTG dog of the same name) that we recorded instrumental tracks for in 2012 but never finished after we decided it wouldn’t go on our next album. So, in many ways it’s a companion piece to our next released album as well as a look at some new material done in a way that we don’t normally work. We like it and hope you do too… download away, share with your friends, etc. xoxo
